UK weather forecast: Wet and cold weekend ahead as thunderstorms hit

The warm weather the UK has enjoyed this week is set to come to a wet and cold end this weekend.

Thunderstorms are expected to hit on Sunday and temperatures will be far from the balmy 20C+ it has been so far this week.

Met Office forecasters warned England and Wales will be cooler today and rather cloudy with patchy rain.

And swathes of eastern England and Scotland will be cloudy and murky with persistent rain for parts of eastern Scotland.

Some of the showers could even hang around until the start of next week, forecasters fear.

Greg Dewhurst from the Met Office said: "The weekend will be more unsettled compared to what we have seen.

"This is because the low pressure will be in charge, replacing the high pressure which has caused the warmer sunshine.

"This low pressure is moving in from Europe, bringing with it showery conditions on Saturday."

Some parts of the south may see the mercury reach as high as 21C but a cooler 15C is likely for many - the May average.

Meanwhile in southern and central England, Wales and Northern Ireland, a mixed bag of sunshine and showers on Saturday will be followed by possible thunder.

Rain will start to dampen spirits across northern parts of the UK on Thursday as a major storm sweeps into Europe, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

Showers will set in through the rest of the week before turning heavier on Saturday and Sunday as temperatures fall.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Maura Kelly said: "The dry pattern will come to an end across western Europe by the end of the week as a large storm system moves in from the Atlantic.”

However another u-turn after the weekend will see a return to blue skies and sunshine by the middle of next week week.

Mr Dewhurst said: “After an unsettled weekend and start to the new week, things will settle down again as we go through the week.

“It might not be quite as nice as we have seen over the past couple of days, but all in all it doesn’t look bad at all.”
