UK weather forecast: Washout weekend flood risks reduced - but hail and thunder on way

South-western areas hit by downpours on Friday are set to face lighter rain today, however it's still set to be a washout weekend.

Amber weather warnings for flooding in South Wales, Devon and Cornwall were issued until midnight on Friday, with yellow rain warnings in place for the south-west coast and Lancashire until the early hours of Saturday.

But the Met Office said they hope the band of extreme wet weather will gradually make way for lighter showers across the whole nation throughout the weekend.

Train services between Aberdare and Fernhill were suspended due to water on the tracks, while the service between Pembroke Dock and Whitland was briefly paused.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) had issued 13 flood warnings on Friday night, for areas where "flooding is expected" around rivers in the west of the country, while 42 flood alerts were in place across the whole of the country where "flooding is possible".

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Met Office said average temperatures will range from 9C in the northern edges of Scotland to 12C on the south coast, and most areas will see rain and sunny spells.

Temperatures are due to drop to an average of 6C on Saturday night, with the cooler weather bringing hail showers in scattered spots across the UK on Sunday.

Blustery winds of up to 26mph are also expected on Saturday, with the strongest gales due to hit the west coast of Scotland and Wales, and south-west England.

Today:

Rain clearing eastern parts of England during the morning, then a blustery day with a mixture of sunny spells and showers, heaviest and most frequent in the south and west. Showers may contain hail with a risk of thunder.

Tonight:

Some eastern parts dry with clear periods, but further showers are expected, particularly in southern and western areas, with some longer spells of rain for north-west Scotland.

Sunday:

A colder day generally, but some spells of sunshine for most, whilst further scattered heavy showers are also likely. Cloudier in the far south-west later with rain by evening.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Rain or showers with strong winds for England and Wales on Monday. Sunshine and showers further north. Sunshine and blustery showers Tuesday and Wednesday, and turning colder.
