UK weather forecast: Britain braces for washout as rain and thundery showers hit

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to cause misery for many in the UK today.

An early mist along North Sea coasts will clear but sunny spells will be few and far between, according to the Met Office .

Instead there will be scattered, slow-moving showers along with heavy, thundery downpours this afternoon.

These will be particularly bad in central and eastern areas and also north east Scotland.

These showers across north and east Scotland will merge tonight giving spells of rain.

But elsewhere the downpours will slowly ease with a chilly morning for many on Tuesday - but clear skies.

Alex Burkill, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “There will be many showers around Monday, some of them could be thundery at times, but there'll be some sunny spells mixed in too.

“On Monday morning, there will be a bit of a cloudy start with some mist and low cloud towards the north sea.

He added: “Later on Monday, there will be showery rain across parts of Northern Ireland, but for the bulk of England and Wales it's a dry start with some bright skies."

Mr Burkill said showers on Monday will be heavy at times and also quite slow-moving.

Despite the wet weather the Met Office has warned of 'moderate' grass pollen levels across parts of the south today with UV levels also moderate to high.

Meanwhile, some forecasters are predicting Britain could swelter through its hottest summer on record with temperatures hitting 35C.
