UK weather forecast: Thunder and hail to lash Britain before sun thaws May misery

Thunder, hail and rain are due to hit parts of the UK before warmer weather thaws the May misery.

While the torrid weather of seven days ago is not likely to be repeated, the weekend will get off to a slightly bleak start with rain hitting eastern parts of the country and the capital on Saturday morning.

Drizzly spells will continue in London and parts of East Anglia until the early evening, with the threat of heavy hail and thunder storms hanging over the region.

The rest of the country will remain dry throughout Saturday.

Alex Burkhill, a meteorologist at the Met Office , said: "The west of the country will be largely dry on Saturday but thundery spells and hail could well hit the east.

"In the sunshine people will experience highs of 17Cor 18C.

"Most of the showers should die out this evening leading to a largely dry night which could turn quite chilly in parts."

A widespread frost is likely to take hold early on Sunday morning, providing a chilly start to an otherwise warm day.

Highs of 16C will be enjoyed in London, Bristol and Manchester as the sun starts to thaw out the early chill.

In the north east, temperatures will reach slightly lower highs but rain should stay away.

On Monday and Tuesday high pressure will drift further eastwards, leading to warmer days but colder nights.

Come Wednesday the temperatures could hit 19 or 20 degrees in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England.

"Rural areas can expect a bit of frost on Sunday morning," Mr Burkhill continued.

"There will be a good deal of dry and sunny weather on Sunday with highs of 20C.

"Monday will be largely light and sunny, as will Tuesday.

"On Wednesday there will be highs of 23C or 24C in the north and in Scotland, which isn't too different from the sunny weather over the Easter Bank Holiday."

While the UK is unlikely to be hit with such an intense weather front before the end of the month, temperatures are unlikely to reach much higher than 20C for the rest of May.
