UK weather forecast: Temperatures to plunge to -3C as autumn finally arrives

Temperatures are about to really plummet over the next few days - but we've certainly not seen the last of the sunshine quite yet.

Although things are about to turn really cold at night and in the early morning, the daytime will be a delight for many with some seeing 19C on Saturday and Sunday.

There will be lots of warmth for Wales, southern and eastern England and some parts of Scotland over the weekend.

But it will be very chilly in the evenings with some paces seeing set for a -3 freeze - and there is rain coming our way from Monday.

The Met Office say temperatures remain way above average for this time of year after an incredible October.

But things will turn early next week, with winter looming large.

Meteorologist Aidan McGivern says the sun will continue to shine for the weekend.

"We're looking at widely 17C or 18C across England, Wales and eastern Scotland, and in some spots there's the possibility of 19C," he said.

"Temperatures way above average for this time of year, and that mild theme continues into the start of next week, but increasingly we'll get an Atlantic influence and that means greater chance of wet and windy weather from Monday onwards.

"Next week looks wet, windy and very mild across the UK, particularly in the west.

"This weekend by contrast will start off cold, and then many places will enjoy a dry and bright weekend, with the brightest skies across the east and the south east.

"Cloud and rain will affect north-western areas, particularly western Scotland and Northern Ireland."

The Met Office man added: "In the countryside, knock off a few degrees and we're looking at widespread frost in the east and the north.

"There could also be some dense fog patches first thing Saturday, slowly lifting through the morning.

"It will be milder towards the west, 17C or 18C towards the southwest, and colder to the north east, 8C or 9C."

The first snowfall of the season could hit as early as next week.

Some forecasts suggest snow could fall over high ground late next week, possibly the October 23-24 weekend.
