UK weather forecast: Sunny spells and showers to sweep UK as autumn chill sets in

Britons are set for a "mixed bag" of sunny spells and outbreaks of rain throughout the rest of the week as autumn arrives.

Forecasters say that most of the UK will have periods of blue skies interspersed with clouds and showers.

Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to stay mild - in the low 20s - right through to next week, according to the Met Office.

But nights will feel chillier as the seasons start to change.

Met Office spokeswoman Becky Mitchell said the week will be "mixed bag of dry spells and showers".

She said: "On Thursday, it looks cloudy across the south with outbreaks of drizzle while further north it is a mixture of sunshine and rain.

"That cloud in the south will clear for Friday morning and again there will be sunshine and showers in the north."

Ms Mitchell said that over the weekend, a front of rain will sweep across the UK but there will also be some fine, dry conditions too.

"This week will feel a bit more autumnal with chillier nights in the forecast and it will also be quite blustery in the north" she said.

Temperatures are set to stay in the low 20s for the rest of the week, Ms Mitchell said.

She added that they might warm up into the mid-20s for the beginning of next week.
