UK weather forecast: Sub-zero temperatures to blast Britain with widespread frost

Britain will be gripped by sub-zero weather conditions as a frosty chill sweeps the country.

Today will be mostly dry with clear skies in the central and southern part of England.

However, the morning further north will begin with showers, particularly  in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: "Plenty of sunshine to come across the UK through today.

"But there will be a few showers in the north and the west and then with clearing skies there will be widespread frost for many of us.

"Showers will continue across the north and the west."

The Scottish Highlands will see a lot of wind, accompanied by hail, according to Mr Dewhuarst.

The northern coastal areas will see showers in the evening and overnight.

"In towns and cities, nine to 13C (48 to 55F) as a maximum, so yes, down on what we’ve seen over the last few days," the forecaster added.

"We could see lows of -3 or -4C (27 or 25F) leading to a frosty start Monday morning in central Scotland."

Next week will start with a dry day before strong winds and rain arrive (Adam Hughes / SWNS)
