UK weather forecast: Sub zero temperatures bring freezing fog as big chill hits

The UK is facing an icy weekend as heavy rain subsides and a big freeze hits some parts of the country.

Forecasters are reporting morning temperatures could plunge below zero in some places, bringing a widespread frost for some.

But, while the torrential rain that crippled some parts of the UK this week will turn to showers, the Met Office reports Saturday could be exceptionally "gloomy" in some places.

As we move towards the end of the weekend however, sunny spells could break through - bringing a very welcome nudge in temperatures.

Through Friday night low pressure remains in place for most of the country - although forecaster Aidan McGivern says rainfall will not be "soaking" and much lighter than recent days.

He added: "Low pressure stays will us for Friday night and it's a damp picture for central and southern England.

"There will be a lot of cloud cover associated with it and we will see a chilly northern sea wind move in."

On Saturday morning, there will be some rain for northern England and southern Scotland and some showers in other western and northern areas.

Western Scotland and Northern Ireland will wake to clear skies - although with this comes some icy temperatures and a widespread morning frost.

Southern England will also see a bright start on Saturday, while conditions in the midlands are expected to be "gloomy" with lots of hill fog.

Sunday is expected to see an all-round improvement in the weather , with most outbreaks of rain expected to clear and give way to drier and brighter conditions.

Central and southern England are likely to see a widespread frost ob Sunday morning, which could struggle to clear as temperatures remain low.

The best of Sunday's sunshine will be across southern England.

Aidan added: "We will see less of the wind and it will generally feel less unpleasant"
