UK weather forecast: Storm Brendan to smash into UK as Met Office issues warnings

The UK is braced for strong winds and heavy rain with Storm Brendan set to smash into the country.

Severe weather warnings are in place across the western half of Britain, Northern Ireland and the north-east of Scotland from 10am on Monday until midnight.

Wind speeds could reach up to 80mph, with the Met Office warning coastal routes and communities could be particularly affected as large waves batter seafronts.

The conditions could cause travel disruption, and those in affected areas are advised to take extra care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges or high open roads.

Another severe weather warning for wind is in place on Tuesday, covering the whole of England and Wales, as a separate low pressure system moves in.

Forecaster Greg Dewhurst told the Standard: “The low pressure system named Storm Brendan is currently over the Atlantic.

“As we go through Monday it will bring some strong winds and heavy rain.

“There is a wind warning across western and northern parts of the UK from 10am until midnight.

“There will be winds across the whole UK but they will be very strong the in west and north, we could see them reaching 60, 70, 80mph.

“There will also be heavy rain pushing eastwards, which with the wind will make for difficult travelling.

“This will clear on Monday night, but there will be a blustery start to Tuesday.”

On Tuesday, a second yellow weather warning will be in place from midday.

Mr Dewhurst added: “Another low pressure system will bring wet and windy weather, with winds speeds reaching up to 70mph locally.

“There is another weather warning in place for the whole of England and Wales from midday until midnight.”
