UK weather forecast: Snow to fall today as temperatures plunge in brutal cold snap

Snow will begin to fall today in parts of the country as Brits brace for a brutal cold snap with temperatures set to plummet.

After an autumn storm lashed the nation experts predict that the mercury is about to drop to near-sub zero temperatures in many regions.

The Met Office said that Wednesday will see colder skies as well as showers, sometimes heavy, for many parts of the country.

London is set to fall to 2C in the morning along with most of the south of England, while temperatures in Wales will range from 2-4C

The north will be slightly warmer but temperatures will barely stay above freezing, prompting predictions for snowfall in the far north.

Meteorologist Helen Roberts of the Met Office told the Sun: "Will there be snow from midnight tonight?

"Yes is the short answer, with some caveats. It won't be continuous.

"There'll be showers on and off, really over the very highest parts of the Cairngorms and possibly also part of central and southern Highlands.

"However, that will really be focused for the time being on just the highest peaks."

As temperatures plunge in the coming days snow will also fall in the north before conditions become more mild by the weekend.

Ms Roberts added it's "very likely" there'll be snow later this month.

The Met Office had earlier issued a warning about temperatures getting colder with strong gales forecast to hit in the coming days.

The forecaster said: “After a wet and windy Halloween with a deep Atlantic low-pressure system and damaging winds, it turns colder into the new week.”

Experts also warned conditions will be breezier and feel very chilly on Wednesday, with isolated showers and sunny spells then forecast for Thursday.

Over the weekend, conditions will turn cloudier from the northwest, with rain and strong winds moving southeast.

Jim Dale, from the British Weather Services, told the Express conditions will be extremely cold this week.

He said: “This will be the coldest week of the autumn to date, with air and ground frosts for many inland areas even as soon as tomorrow."
