UK weather forecast: SNOW showers and frost as subzero freeze grips Britain

Chilly temperatures will bring widespread frost and possible wintry showers to Britain over the next few days, the Met Office says.

A cold front will send overnight temperatures down to -6C in the north and just above the freezing mark in the south - and they will barely climb out of the single digits during the day.

Britons will wake up to widespread frost and fog patches could disrupt the morning commute in places.

It will feel quite chilly in the breeze as it becomes increasingly windy over the weekend, when wintry showers could fall over eastern parts of the UK.

Wednesday got off to a cold and crisp start with frost in parts of northern England, Northern Ireland and much of Scotland, where the temperature dropped to almost -6C overnight.

An early rain across Devon and Cornwall will clear as the UK enjoys a fine day with sunny spells.

Temperatures will hit about 12C in the south and will remain in the single digits in the north.

The far north will be cloudier and there is a chance of a few showers.

The Met Office said it will feel chilly in the breeze, especially in the southeast.

It will be clear, dry and cold overnight with widespread frost by morning and perhaps a few fog patches in places, it added.

Light rain is expected in the far north of Scotland.

Thursday will be mainly dry with clear skies across much of the country. 

Showers are possible in northern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

From Friday, temperatures will be cooler thanks to a Scandinavian front, the Express reported, although it will be largely dry and sunny during the day.

It will turn cloudier and windier by Sunday with a chance of wintry showers in eastern areas.

The Met Office has warned of hail or sleet as temperatures drop.

Wednesday

A fine day across the UK with sunny spells, once any early rain across south Devon and Cornwall soon clears.

Generally cloudier in the far north, perhaps with a few showers.

Chilly in the breeze, especially in the southeast.

Wednesday night

Clear, dry and cold overnight, with widespread frost by morning and perhaps a few fog patches in places.

However, some cloud and light rain in the far north of Scotland.

Thursday

Another mainly fine and dry day, with clear skies for many.

A little cloudier in central and eastern areas, and some showers possible in northern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Friday to Sunday

Cold, with widespread frost at night.

Largely dry and sunny by day, though turning cloudier by Sunday.

A chance of wintry showers in eastern areas.

Increasingly windy.
