UK weather forecast: Snow hits Britain ahead of a month of rain in one day

Snow has blanketed the north of England and parts of Scotland today, ahead of up to a month's worth of rain and 70mph winds hitting the UK on Saturday.

The white stuff fell over Cumbria and south-east Scotland this morning, causing traffic chaos for many.

Roads were shut in Scotland and some school buses were cancelled as a result of the wintry conditions.

Further disruption is expected on Saturday, with the Met Office issuing four yellow weather alerts across the country.

The warnings cover north-west and south Scotland, north-east England and north Wales.

Strong winds in north Wales and north-east England are likely to delay flights, rail services and car journeys - and potentially cause power cuts.

Severe weather is expected this weekend, following on from today's snowfall (PA)

The worst of the blustery weather is expected between 3am and 6pm.

Flooding is likely in north-west and south Scotland, with the potential for 'fast flowing' floodwater between 4am and 9pm on Saturday.

Up to 100mm (around four inches) of rain is possible over the high ground of Argyll, with between 40 and 60mm expected across Scotland.

Four weather warnings have been issued for Saturday (Met Office)

The average total rainfall for the UK in January is 122mm.

The wind warnings for Wales and north-east England state: "Strong southwesterly winds are expected, with gusts of 50 to 60 mph likely, perhaps 70 mph over the highest routes."

Amey, which maintains roads in Scotland, tweeted: “Driving to the conditions is essential during winter weather as a small incident can have a huge impact on traction and gritters being able to pass and keep roads open.”

Gritters were out in Scotland this morning, treating road surfaces.
