UK weather forecast: SNOW and ice return as temperatures plunge to brutal -5C

The first week of British summer time is kicking off with freezing temperatures, another blast of snow and April showers that will be heavy at times.

It's not a cruel April Fool's Day joke - temperatures could plunge to as low as -5C with many places feeling much colder than recent days.

Outbreaks of rain will hit much of the country this week and some showers will be heavy and accompanied by strong winds, according to the Met Office.

Britain is in the second week of spring, but wintry weather isn't finished just yet - snow, hail and sleet are expected over high ground as temperatures drop.

Worst April Fool's Day jokes revealed - causing deaths and mass panic

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said some places will see frost at night, while mountainous areas of Scotland may see snow.

He said: "It's really a week of April showers, a mix of rain and some snow on the high ground and some hail.

"It's going to be a very different week to the week just gone."

Mr Snell said remote areas of Scotland and Wales could see temperatures fall to as low as - 5C at night, while temperatures in other areas will hover around freezing.

Daytime temperatures are expected to be around 10-12C in the south and around 8-9C in the north.

Monday got off to a chilly start with temperatures falling below zero in the north.

Most of England and Wales will be dry and increasingly warm, with plenty of sunshine in the south and east later, the Met Office said.

Cloud, rain and strong winds will move into northern and northwestern areas during the day.

The UV will be moderate for England and Wales, but low in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In the evening, rain will fall in Wales and northwest England, with showers further north turning wintry on hills.

Southern and eastern England will be dry apart from a few showers in the far southeast, the Met Office said.

From Wednesday to Friday, showers or longer spells of rain are expected and strong winds will batter most areas at times.
