UK weather forecast: 'Severe' thunderstorms to bring torrential rain and hail

Britain is braced for yet more flooding as 'severe' thunderstorms threaten to bring torrential rain and hail over the next two days.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for much of the south and east with lightning strikes and strong winds also expected.

The wet weather will continue today after a heavy downpours over the weekend, although temperatures will be warmer than last week.

Torrential rain is expected in the north-east, Midlands, east, south, south-east, south-west and west of England, with potential flooding in some areas.

Floodwater could cause power cuts, disruption to rail and bus passengers and delays for drivers.

The Met Office has also warned about strong winds and hail in its yellow weather alert, which predicts volatile conditions between 6pm tonight and 9pm tomorrow.

The anticipated thunderstorms will disappoint many who were hoping for a heatwave this week, after forecasters predicted sunshine and temperatures in the mid-teens.

Despite the expected downpours, the mercury will not dip too low - and will even reach the 20C mark in Norwich today.

It will be a cloudy day for most of the country although some areas near the Scottish border and in Northern Ireland will see sunshine later on.

Heavy rainfall is likely tomorrow as the thunderstorms take hold of the majority of England, with Wales also set to get a drenching.

A spokesman for netweather.tv said: "By Tuesday morning we could be seeing the first signs of hefty showers crossing the English Channel on the radar.

"The Met office warning only starts at 6pm on Tuesday evening, running through Wednesday, but there will be downpours before that with more cloud in the south.

"The central swathe of the UK has a fine day and there will be more scattered showers for Northern Ireland and the north-west half of Scotland tomorrow.

"The main passing of hefty showers and potential thunderstorms looks to have passed by early Wednesday evening as the warmer, humid air clears away and everywhere looks fresher.

"The rest of the week, sees a westerly flow bringing showers, but as pressure builds there will be more settled conditions, but not completely dry, for the end of this week."

Flood warnings are still in place in some parts of the country, following the torrential downpours last week which prompted the Met Office to issue a 'danger to life' amber weather warning.

Heavy rainfall led to flooding across the country, particularly in Leicestershire, where the Royal Air Force was drafted in after a river breached its banks.

A Chinook helicopter was deployed in a Lincolnshire town to drop sand in an attempt to stop the flow of water after the River Steeping experienced a breach.

Seventy properties were hit by flooding, but Lincolnshire County Council warned that up to 720 could be affected after it said the town of Wainfleet had more than two months of rain in just two days.

The mood at Download Festival and the Isle of Wight Festival this weekend was also dampened by the rainfall.

After paying hundreds to see headliners Def Leppard, Tool and Slipknot, some Download revellers decided to pack it in before even watching a single act because the conditions were so bad, Derbyshire Live reported.
