UK weather forecast: Severe 'danger to life' flood warnings amid snow and -2C freeze

Brits are facing severe flood warnings with a “danger to life” alert while temperatures could drop to -2C this weekend as snow falls along with more heavy rain.

The UK has been battered by heavy rainfall over the past few days that has seen roads under water and traffic mayhem.

Plenty more rain is still to come this weekend but the main concern is the build of water that is causing severe flooding.

In Scotland there are seven severe flood warnings in place along with 30 flood warnings, with the worst affected parts in central and eastern areas.

The Environment Agency states: “A severe flood warning means there is a danger to life: you must act now.”

More heavy rain is expected especially on Saturday night (wxcharts)

Advice includes: “Avoid driving or walking through flood water: just 30cm (one foot) of fast flowing water could move your car and even shallow moving water can knock you off your feet.”

In England there are also seven flood warnings and 56 flood alerts which are dotted mainly in the east of the country.

BBC weather forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker said: “The rain clouds are starting to clear and the weather is improving across Scotland after what has been a very wet couple of days. And of course not just Scotland but northern England too.

"Here is the radar from the last 12 hours or so and in Aberdeenshire in Charr we had about 160mm of rain in just the last two days or so, but that rain is getting lighter. It is not going to be an entirely dry day though on Saturday.

“The weekend overall will be a mixed bag for most of us, certainly some sunshine in the forecast but blustery showers are expected too.”

The temperatures are expected to plummet on Saturday night while more heavy rain sweeps in from the west.

"A frost developing quite widely across Northern Ireland but also south western Scotland and the south west were temperatures could come down to -1C or -2C," said Met Office forecaster Annie Shuttleworth.

"This band of quite heavy rain will push eastwards. Now as that rain pushes into the colder air it could fall as some snow across the top of mountains in north eastern Scotland, across the Grampians for example. Further south we could see quite a lot of rain, it could be quite heavy at times so bit of a wet night on Saturday."
