October has been a very up and down month when it comes to the weather in the UK, with warm sunny days and bright mornings mixed in with sudden and intense downpours of rain.
So far, so autumnal. As things move on through the month, though, we’re looking at an even more unsettled picture as cooler temperatures and more rain set in across the north while the south stays drier and warmer, though with some foggy mornings.
Later on in October, the split between a colder, soggier north and a warmer, drier south will become more pronounced: there’s more rain in store, and a lot of blustery days across the north-west in particular.
But what’s going to happen with the weather today (Tuesday 12 October)? Here’s what to expect.
What is the UK weather forecast?
Morning
Tuesday will start off grey and still for most, with cloud cover over most of the UK and the threat of rain in the north of Scotland and the north-east of England, as well as the west of Northern Ireland.
It won’t be particularly cold, though, with temperatures up above 10 degrees across the country by mid-morning.
Those on the south, particularly in Hampshire, Devon and South Wales, can expect to see a bit of sun through the gloom, though, and there should be some for Edinburgh and the central belt in Scotland too.
Afternoon
Wales and the south of England can look forward to a warm afternoon, with temperatures up around 15 or 16 degrees.
However, those bursts of sunshine from the morning are going to disappear as cloud moves in across the entirety of the UK. The east coast of Scotland will get scattered showers too, as will parts of the English east coast.
Evening
The rain spells which started on the east coast of England will move inland toward Lincolnshire and the East Midlands in the early evening before moving further south toward London as the evening wears on.
