UK weather forecast: Roasting heat dome to blast Britain with temperatures of 31C

Britain is set to bake in a 31C heatwave as a 'continental heat dome' hits the country.

Temperatures will reach 27C in England today, with south, south-east and south-west England and south Wales basking in sunshine.

Things will get even hotter over the weekend and into next week, with Sunday bringing highs of 28C in some parts of the UK and Monday promising temperatures of 31C in places.

Sadly downpours will dampen the hot weather for many, with rainfall expected from tomorrow until Sunday in some areas.

Nearly all of the country will experience heat in the mid 20s on Monday, with sunny conditions across the UK.

Things will get cooler tomorrow and the mercury will not rise above the low 20s for much of Britain until the weekend.

Heavy showers and cloudy conditions are expected tomorrow, despite a fairly bright start to the day.

Further downpours are expected on Thursday morning, however things will get sunnier in the afternoon.

Lighter rainfall and cloud is expected on Friday, with heavy showers lashing the country again on Saturday.

The Met Office says Britain will experience higher than average temperatures over the next three months, as part of a 'continental heat dome'.

The organisation's three month weather outlook states: "For July/August/September as a whole, above average temperatures are more likely than below average temperatures.

"Overall, the probability that the UK-average temperature for July-August-September will fall into the coldest of our five categories is 5 per cent and the probability that it will fall into the warmest of our five categories is between 35 and 40 per cent.

"The pattern of sea surface temperature anomalies in the North Atlantic Ocean slightly increases the probability of higher than average pressure across Northern Europe.

"During summer, high pressure is usually associated with warmer than average conditions."

Met Office five-day weather forecast

Today:

Plenty of dry weather with good sunny spells for most. However, some showers are likely to develop across Northern Ireland and Scotland, where locally heavy. A few showers are likely for Wales and the Midlands. Feeling rather warm for most.

Tonight:

Showers soon fading to leave a largely dry night, with clear spells. Some isolated fog patches, mainly in the west. Rain and a freshening breeze arriving into far northwest later.

Wednesday:

Cloud and outbreaks of rain, locally heavy, will spread east across northern and western parts during the day. Further south and east mostly dry with sunny spells. Generally warm.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

A band of rain moving east on Thursday, with brighter, fresher and showery conditions following. Wet and windy on Friday. Sunny spells and scattered heavy and thundery showers on Saturday.
