Travel chaos is expected after snowfalls across large parts of northern England and Scotland and ferocious winds in London.
Forecasters have warned of a risk that some vehicles may become stranded on roads on Thursday morning as they issued an amber warning for parts of the UK.
Delays to rail services and flights are also expected with some rural areas likely to be affected by power cuts, the Met Office said in statement.
The Met Office said flying debris could pose “danger to life” and may damage buildings as they warned of ferocious winds battering London and the south-east on Thursday morning.
