UK weather forecast: More rain on the way as Hurricane Lorenzo closes in after heavy flooding

Heavy rain is set to lash the UK as the remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo close in as the country recovers from thunderstorms and flooding.

More weather warnings have been put in place as clean up operations get under way after an extremely wet September chased off the last dregs of summer.

Temperatures will reach a mild 16C in some areas today, but this evening the mercury will plunge towards zero and ground frost will grip rural parts of the country.

The Isle of Man has been one of the worst hit affected areas by the rains this week.

More rain is expected by the end of the week (PA)

Police declared a major incident after the Laxey River burst its banks and left trapped people in their homes.

Meanwhile, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service said on Tuesday that its crews would be working throughout the night in the village of Ruskington to assist with flooding in the area.

Localised flooding hit many areas of the country, including in East Anglia, North Yorkshire and the West Midlands.

More wet weather is on the way come the end of the week, with a yellow warning in place for Northern Ireland tomorrow and the south west of Britain on Friday.

Met Office forecaster Bonnie Diamond told the Standard: “Wednesday will be the best day this week.

“There will be clear skies and we can expect temperatures of around 15 or 16 degrees.

“But tonight temperatures will fall closer to freezing and could see some ground frost in rural areas.

“Tomorrow ex-hurricane Lorenzo will reach the UK.”

The yellow weather warning for Northern Ireland is for wind, and the rest of the island of Ireland is expected to be battered by the storm as it moves up from the Atlantic Ocean.

A similar warning has been issued for the West Country and southern parts of Wales on Friday.

Ms Diamond added: “There will be heavy rain across the south west of the UK through Friday.

“It will be clear into the evening and at the beginning of Saturday, with further rain on Saturday night.”
