UK weather forecast: Met Office warns 'very strong winds' could cause flying debris

Monster 75mph winds will batter most of the UK this week, forecasters have warned.

New weather warnings for the gales have been issued by the Met Office, which is particularly concerned for the Midlands and Wales on Thursday.

They'll be "a danger to life" as a result of falling debris.

And travel will be particularly difficult on Thursday as "roads and bridges could close".

The gusts will also cause power cuts in some places.

The huge weather warning affects all of Wales, the Midlands and parts of northern England.

It has been issued as far south as Harpenden, Hertfordshire, out to remote north Norfolk in the east and up to the Durham and Cumbria areas in the north.

The strong gust will be at its fiercest across central England (PA)

"Very strong winds potentially bringing some disruption through Thursday," the Met Office says.

"A spell of very strong winds is expected to spread from the south-west across Wales and many parts of England through Thursday morning.

"Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible for many areas, with gusts of 70 mph in places. Winds will begin to ease across Wales through late morning, and across the rest of the area by evening."

The warning adds: "There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris.

"There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected."
