UK weather forecast: Met Office says heat-wave will return in 28C swing over 48 hours

Temperatures in Britain will soar to nearly 21C later this week despite parts of the country having seen lows of -7C since the Easter bank holiday heat wave.

The cold snap, which has swept the UK since the weekend saw northeast England plunged well below zero on Tuesday night, will be quickly thawed.

By Thursday locked down Brits will be once again basking in summer-like heat with forecasters predicting highs of 21C in the south.

It won't quite hit the 25C peak felt over the bank holiday which was followed by a sharp decline as freezing air from Norway settled over our isles.

BBC meteorologist Carol Kirkwood said "Jack Frost was busy" so far this week, though fellow forecaster Simon King said “temperatures will start to rise further with more sunshine” on Wednesday.

Mr King added that Thursday, meanwhile will likely be a "warmer day still" with "those highs up to 20C or 21C".

The Met Office forecast for Wednesday reads: “Following a further cold and frosty start another sunny day follows for the majority.

"The exception remains the far northwest where it remains stubbornly cloudy.”

With hotter weather once again set to frustrate isolating Brits, there are fears police could have plenty on their hands trying to prevent people venturing into parks and joining public gatherings.

The Government, meanwhile, is likely to extend the draconian measures by at least a further three weeks on Thursday.

The Met Office's long-range forecast predicts "settled conditions seem likely to continue for much of the country" with “good spells of sunshine and dry weather, especially across central areas of the UK”.

However, as the month progresses it warns showers and longer spells of rain are possible - with parts of the north also seeing "stronger winds".

With Easter having already seen some of the hottest temperatures on record for this time of year, bookmakers are already slashing odds on this month going down as the hottest April since records began.
