Forecasters have issued a severe weather warning with heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast across a swathe of the country over the weekend.

A yellow weather warning for rain is already in place for south west England and will last until 6pm on Saturday.

The Met Office has warned that flooding is possible in homes and businesses in the affected area while disruption is also likely on buses and train services.

Other parts of southern England, including London, also face a washout weekend.

Forecaster Mark Wilson, of the Met Office, told the Standard: “It will be a cloudy weekend, starting off dry, with rain spreading through the morning, turning it into a wet day.

“A band of heavy rain will head towards the south with temperatures reaching 9-10C.”

Sunday will be the better of two days in the capital.

“There will be showers in the morning making it chilly. Temperatures will reach a high of 9C,” Mr Wilson added.

Meanwhile northern parts of England and Scotland and Northern Ireland will avoid the wet weather over the weekend.

On the south coast, it will be windy with further showers.

Looking ahead to next week, temperatures in the capital will remain around 9C until Wednesday when the mercury could rise to 12C. Western parts face wind and rain on Tuesday.
