Heavy rain could cause flooding of homes and businesses across the eastern half of the UK next week.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings lasting from Monday afternoon to midday on Thursday.
Forecasters said up to 60mm of rain could fall in some regions in less than six hours.
“There is a chance that heavy prolonged rainfall could lead to local flooding and disruption to transport,” a Met Office spokesperson said.
“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.
“Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.
“Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.”
The weather warning for Monday and Tuesday covers London and the southeast of England, East Anglia, the East Midlands, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire.
By Wednesday the worst of the weather is expected to move northwards to cover the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the northeast of England.
“The heavy rain may also be accompanied by strong to gale force northeasterly winds,” said the Met Office.
Temperatures expected to continue to remain below average for this time of year.
It follows a miserable start to the weekend with many parts of the UK seeing chilly temperatures, wind and rain, despite the passing of the worst of Storm Miguel, which killed three boat crew off the French coast on Friday.
The bad weather forced a ship carrying 250 D-Day veterans home from commemorations in France to divert to Dover instead of Portsmouth.
Sunday is expected to be warmer and sunnier, particularly in northeast England and Scotland.
Although much of Britain is likely to see scattered showers going into the afternoon, the temperature is expected to peak at around 20C.
