UK weather forecast: Met Office and BBC say May bank holiday could be coldest on record

This year's May Day bank holiday could be the coldest on record, the latest Met office forecast has suggested.

Temperatures are going to drop from tomorrow (May 4) onwards and are expected to be on the chilly side in Bristol.

According to BBC weather presenter and meteorologist Simon King, this means the upcoming May day bank holiday could be the coldest since records began.

So far, the chilliest one recorded was in 1982, when the temperature was 14.5C, reports Manchester Evening News.

This is a stark contrast to last year, when the early May bank holiday was the hottest recorded since 1978, at a balmy 28.7C.

The Met Office is also predicting a 'cold and bright' bank holiday weekend.

Discussing the possibility it could be the chilliest on record, Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said: "I don't think we'll get lower than that, but I wouldn't completely rule it out, so we'll keep an eye on that one."

Its forecast suggests many of us will notice a marked difference in temperature between this weekend and the Easter weekend.

This is because a cold air mass will cover the UK, bringing a dip in temperatures with some sharp night frosts likely.

Snow is even expected over the mountains in Scotland but it could also spread to lower levels there, and over higher ground in northern England and Snowdonia in North Wales, Mirror Online reports.
