Brits are facing a bitterly cold commute on Wednesday as they return to work.

As normal service resumes following the festive season, temperatures are set to plummet overnight following the recent mild weather.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing in much of the UK, with the Met Office warning people to “dig out the gloves” in time for their morning journey.

Meteorologist Helen Roberts told the Standard: “Cold air will be coming in across the UK, meaning there will be a widespread frost overnight and into the morning, with some patches of freezing fog.

“It will be widely below freezing across the UK, and in some parts of the countryside it could drop as low as -4C.

“However, it will be dry and sunny by the daytime.”

Temperatures in the UK will range from 5C to 7C during the daytime on Wednesday. However, some parts of Scotland will face freezing conditions.

In London and the south-east, temperatures are also set to plummet below freezing overnight, reaching 6C in the daytime.

Ms Roberts added the UK will see a similar pattern of overnight chill for the rest of the week.
