UK weather forecast: Huge 500-mile storm to batter Britain in early autumn deluge

Britain is facing an 'early autumn' as thunderstorms stretching 500-miles batter the country this weekend.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms covering Scotland, north Wales and north-west regions of England.

Scattered heavy showers are predicted to cause road closures and travel disruptions in the affected areas today.

An active severe flood warning is still in place at Whaley Bridge where the damaged reservoir wall is being repaired.

But the troubled weather won't affect the midlands and southeastern England - and temperatures are set to soar to as high as 26C.

Sunday will see a cloudy start with a gentle breeze before the sun breaks through, keeping it warm for the rest of the day.

Looking into next week, a band of showery rain will be coming through in the early hours on Monday but it will shift towards the east as hours past.

The week ahead looks more unsettled as sunny spells and showers may develop into heavy, thundery rain.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson said: “There's potential for high rainfall totals as low pressure dominates the next week across the country. We're closely monitoring further warnings.
"

“The first low pressure brings heavy showers until Wednesday, heaviest in the North and West but with gusty winds in the South, and the next low pressure from Friday brings showers for the weekend.

“Unsettled conditions will probably persist until mid-month. After August 17 has signs high pressure could build, bringing drier and more settled conditions in the South, with a chance of warmer interludes."

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: "It's an early taste of autumn with four Atlantic low pressure systems spoiling the next fortnight of school holidays. Floods and 50mph gusts are expected.

“But summer isn't over. Heat is forecast to return from mid-August, with 31C in the South as continental warmth returns.

Today:

Rain in the west will move eastwards through the morning, turning more showery. Heavy and thundery showers developing ahead of this across central and northern areas, with torrential downpours and hail possible. Largely dry elsewhere. Warm or very warm.

Tonight:

Any thunderstorms will slowly clear eastwards through the evening, with rain possible across southeastern areas. More rain will spread into western parts through the night, heavy in places.

Monday:

Showery rain will move eastwards through Monday. Sunny spells will follow from the west but with scattered showers, most frequent across the north and west, where they could be thundery.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Unsettled throughout. There will be sunny spells but showers will develop, often heavy and thundery, and slow-moving across the north. Fewer showers across the west by Thursday. Near normal temperatures.
