UK Weather forecast: Heavy rain to last Brits by week's end as temperatures plunge

A dry start to the week will make way for heavy rain by the time the weekend comes around, according to new forecasts.

Torrential downpours look set lash northern parts of the UK in the days ahead, as weather maps from WXCharts show a band of adverse weather arriving from across the Atlantic on Thursday.

This rainfall could reach levels of 10mm per hour in Northern Ireland and Scotland by the evening, with sustained but less intense precipitation expected in the south of England and Wales in the early hours of Friday.

Another wave of heavy rain is then expected to sweep down across the British Isles on Sunday afternoon, setting the tone for a wet week to follow.

Temperatures will also continue to tumble as we head further into autumn, with lows of 5C being felt in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by the weekend, according to BBC Weather.

Terry Scholey from Netweather warned in a blog post that "overnight grass frosts" could return to "vulnerable rural areas" in the nights ahead, though this would be balanced with plenty of "sunny spells" on Sunday.

The changing of the seasons has even produced some interesting weather extremes across the nation in the last 24 hours alone, according to the Met Office.

A summer-like high temperature of 20C in Plymouth on Monday contrasted with a chilly 0.4C at Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire.

Settled weather also provided an appropriate backdrop for the nation's farewell to Queen Elizabeth II yesterday, with thousands of mourners lining the streets of London and Windsor in mostly dry and bright conditions.
