UK weather forecast: Heavy rain as Met Office issues two day warning for downpours

Heavy rain is to hit parts of the UK with the Met Office issuing a two day weather warning for downpours.

After a miserable weekend for many that saw wet weather and winds of up to 60mph, the outlook for the first half of the week isn't much better.

The heavy showers are expected to sweep across areas of the UK on Monday afternoon and into the evening but the worst of the, are forecast for next two days.

Two yellow weather warnings for rain are in place for parts of Scotland, from midnight on Tuesday until 3pm on Wednesday.

The Met Office says heavy and prolonged rain is expected, with risks of flooding and travel disruption.

The east of England is expected to avoid the worst of the wetness, and may even seen unseasonable warmth of 17C midweek.

But the rain will soon be replaced by wintery conditions, with frost and a sharp temperature drop by the end of the week.

Britain faces winter's first proper snow as an 800 mile-wide -3C 'polar pulse' delivers a five-day chill from Thursday.

Only dustings of snow have fallen so far this autumn in Scotland and North Yorkshire.

But now northern England is forecast for snow more widely, with hills most at risk, and even the South is threatened by flurries.

A Met Office spokeswoman said of Monday: "Heavier rain will work its way into parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, North West England and later on western Scotland too in the afternoon.

"Elsewhere it should stay largely dry and hanging onto that sunshine in the far east.

"A band of rain will continue its journey eastwards through Monday evening with many places seeing, again, some rain.

"However, looking ahead to Tuesday that rain will linger across north western areas; very heavy rain to come, warnings in force.

"Looking ahead to mid week as a cold front passes through, cooler air from the north will filter down so a colder end to the week with frost for many."

MET OFFICE OUTLOOK

Today:

Some showery rain in the far north but otherwise dry for many with some brighter spells, mainly in the east and northeast. Rain arriving into the west during the afternoon.

Tonight:

Tuesday:

Rain persisting over hills and mountains from north Wales northwards, particularly over northwest Scotland where some large totals building up. Some brightness possible in eastern parts. Breezy and very mild

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:
