UK weather forecast: Heavy rain and thunderstorms set to drench Britain

Wet weather and thunderstorms are set to strike the UK today.

And the recent sunshine will not have returned by the weekend making it miserable for many, according to the Met Office.

Showers are due to hit the south east this morning with thunder and rain for the north of the country and much of Scotland.

Northern Ireland, Scotland, Somerset, Hampshire, the Midlands and Yorkshire are all set for rain this morning and moving into the afternoon.

Elsewhere, across Wales, central and southern England it will be fine, the Met Office have forecast.

Bar the occasional shower, much of the rest of the country will remain dry, with temperatures reaching 18-21C in most areas and up to 25C in south east England.

And Friday is predicted to be little better - by the end of the day almost all of England will have seen rain, along with the west coast of Wales.

The heavy rain could make driving conditions dangerous, the Met Office have warned.

Temperatures on Friday are likely to be a little lower than on previous days, with highs of 22C in the south-east.

And while some sunshine may make an appearance on Saturday - rain is still expected for much of the country.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said the weekend's weather will be "hit and miss" due to a band of rain moving in from the south west.

He said: "That will still be clearing eastwards through Saturday morning, particularly along the East coast.

“In its wake there will be periods of brightness but there is a mixture of heavy, potentially thundery showers as well."

The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland is expected to see "changeable" conditions when it gets underway today.

The Met Office weather forecast for the opening round expects "passing showers throughout the day" with short bursts of heavy rain.

Winds of 20 to 22mph are forecast in late morning.

Friday sees a continued chance of rain, although the forecast is for "mainly dry" weather, particularly at the start of the day.

The conditions are forecast to brighten at the weekend with temperatures rising, although it is expected to remain changeable.
