UK weather forecast: Heavy rain and thunder to strike before balmy 22C heat spell

Forecasters have predicted torrential downpours for much of Tuesday along with thundery conditions before the mercury soars to highs of 22C for the weekend.

The Met Office has predicted a band of heavy rain to move northwards throughout the country today with warnings of thundery showers in places.

This will lead to some sunnier spells with warmer temperatures in the south but chilly weather in the north and northeast.

Forecaster Aidan McGivern at the Met Office said: "Warmer and drier weather is on the way over the Easter weekend.

"But still some rain to talk about over the next couple of days. Warmer weather has already arrived for many, still a chill for the northeast of Scotland. Winds here coming from the North Sea.

"We're going to see some outbreaks of showers or rain continue through Monday night and into Tuesday.

"One area of showers becoming a larger area of rain pushing into eastern and northern Scotland through the night.

"Next area of showers moves up then from the south, perhaps even some thundery downpours for Wales and the southwest through the night."

He warned of a 'grey start to the day' with a lot of mist and cloud and temperatures set to hit peaks of about 16 or 17 C in central and southern England by the afternoon.

It comes ahead of predictions that the UK could see some of the hottest temperatures of the year this Easter Weekend with highs of up to 22C predicted across the country.

Dry conditions are expected for most of the UK ahead of the bank holiday, with many people expecting to make the most of the glorious sunshine.

And with travellers plotting their weekend, news of the warm weather looks set to mean travel will be busy over the bank holiday weekend.

The South East is predicted to be very warm over the weekend with temperatures widely above average across the UK.

However, the North West will also experience some lingering cloud, making eastern areas the best destination for sunseekers over the Easter weekend.

UK Weather forecast
