UK weather forecast: Gloomy Britain to see 50mm of rain as Storm Edouard strikes

Much of Britain is in for "dull and damp" weather over the next few days with 50mm of rain to fall in parts as Tropical Storm Edouard moves in.

The cyclone continues to travel through the Atlantic Ocean and is expected to reach the UK by Thursday - only adding to the deluge of downpours for Brits.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said the worst of the weather will be seen in Wales before the weekend with "50mm plus in some of the more exposed spots".

"Temperatures once again held back because of the cloud and outbreaks of rain," he continued.

National Resources Wales has placed two flood alerts in place, as a result.

BBC meteorologist Tomascz Schafernaker agreed Britain is going to be left particularly "soggy" with outbreaks of rain to "hang around for 48 hours or so".

However, he said the weekend's "looking pretty good" with "lots of warm sunshine on the way" - and some forecasters predict the UK could see seven days of heat next week.

Netweather weather charts show temperatures hitting 26C between next Sunday and July 20 but the forecaster has also indicated 30C is possible.

In the meantime, Mr Schafernaker said a "ribbon of cloud stretching all the way from Denmark across the UK, out in the Atlantic" will bring "waves of rain rippling along" today.

The "elongated weather fronts" currently cloaking Britain saw temperatures plummet in Scotland overnight, with highs of just 7C in the north while some of the glens were expected to drop to freezing.

However, Mr McGivern said a south westerly breeze is "bringing increasingly humid air" meaning much of the country will feel muggy with average temperatures of 17C.

He said rainfall will be "on and off" rather than persistent but "there will be some heavier outbreaks at times", particularly in southern England and South Wales.

"A cloudy picture, a grey and gloomy picture," he added.
