UK weather forecast: Gales, frost and heavy rain to freeze parts of Britain over weekend

Strong winds, frost and rain will hit parts of Britain this weekend as chillier autumn weather settles in.

People living in northern regions may find some wet snow on the ground on Sunday night, according to the Met Office

Gales and blustery showers are forecast on Saturday across northern Scotland

A Met Office spokesman said that a "few wintry flurries of snow" could fall on the top of mountains in the Cairngorms

"It will be gusty in eastern Scotland and also in northeast England," he said. "There will be winds at around 50mph."

The rain in the north is expected to sink into southern Scotland and the north of England by nightfall.

People living in the south of the UK will see patches of frost develop on Saturday night before cloudy weather arrives on Sunday.

Wet and windy conditions will follow next week for northern regions and cooler, overcast weather will spread across the south by the second week of October.

"Temperatures through October look a little bit below average but that is nothing unusual for this time of year," the spokesman said.

However southern parts of the UK may see milder, more settled weather develop towards the end of the month, according to the Met Office's latest 30-day forecast.
