UK weather forecast: Frosty start before temperatures soar despite 'gale force winds'

Overnight rain will make way for a frosty morning in parts of Britain today before temperatures pick up as the mini spring heatwave continues.

The UK is set to be hotter than Sydney in the run up to Easter, peaking at 24C - but that doesn't tell the whole story.

Parts of the country will wake up to 1C temperatures on Tuesday before temperatures climb into the teens in the afternoon.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said some Brits will see highs  of 18C - but that this warmth will be countered by "gale force winds" in others by tonight.

"Showers will ease overnight and there will be frost in place by dawn, but Tuesday will be another bright day," he said.

"Clear skies will lead to a frost in places and a few shallow mist and fog patches but they will soon lift and temperatures will also rise."

The meteorologist went on to say for many of us - despite the frustrations of coronavirus lockdown - will be treated to "simply a sunny day, feeling warm in the sunshine".

"In the south, 17 to 18 degrees but the wind will pick up across north and west of Scotland.

"That will make it feel cool and that wind will continue to pick up."

Mr McGivern said things will "turn cloudy and wet in the far north west" by the end of the day "with the wind this stage reaching gale force".

Britain is in the middle of an eight-day heat surge thanks to a rush from Africa, meaning the hottest days for six months.

Britain is set to be hotter than Australia with up to 24C in an eight-day sizzle lasting through the Easter weekend – thanks to an 800 mile-wide 'African heat rush.'

Sunday was the hottest day of the year so far, topping 21C, while forecasters predict Wednesday and Maundy Thursday could reach 22 and 24C.

Good Friday then is expected to hit 23C with the remainder of the bank holiday, including Easter Monday, seeing 20C.

By the end of the week much of the Mediterranean will be having to settle for 17C while Bondi in Sydney will struggle to match Britain's peak coming in at a likely 22C - a couple of degrees behind the UK.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Easter is usually a busy travelling time but it is important people follow instructions and stay home and save lives.

"Enjoy the weather from your window or garden, if you have one,” he added.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “The Easter weekend will be a little cooler and could see some April showers, most likely in the north.”
