Christmas revellers across the UK can expect fine and dry weather on Christmas Day, after a frosty start to the morning.
According to the Met Office, there will be some patches of fog in the morning but those will clear and make way for sunshine.
Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: “Christmas Day is looking like a lovely day for pretty much the whole of the UK.
“It will be a cold start in the morning with some fog, but once that clears we are looking at a dry day across the country with sunny spells.”
The dry weather will be a welcome respite from persistent downpours and flooding that caused transport chaos earlier this week.
A severe yellow weather warning has been issued for Christmas Eve as thunderstorms are set to hit parts of south Wales and southwest England.
There are still over 170 flood warnings and alerts in place by the Environment Agency throughout England and Wales.
But the rain is expected to peter out overnight and temperatures will dip to freezing in most towns and cities, making for a frosty Christmas morning.
It will be too mild for snow anywhere except on higher ground in Scotland.
Mr Dewhurst said: “If there is any snow it will be over the tops of Scottish mountains, which we don’t class as a white Christmas.”
In order to class a Christmas as white, the Met Office has to record a single snowflake falling at any one of a number of observation locations throughout the UK.
Observation locations include Buckingham Palace, Edinburgh Castle, and the Millennium Stadium.
Met Office records show the last UK-wide white Christmas was in 2010, one of just four occasions over the past 51 years when the country has had a widespread coating of snow on Christmas Day itself.
