UK weather forecast: Freezing fog sees temperatures plunge to -2C ahead of 'polar blast'

Britain is braced for a chilly weekend as temperatures plunge to -2C today ahead of another cold week.

Freezing weather conditions are expected especially across northern parts of the UK, Met Office forecasters have said.

A "polar blast" could hit Scotland, bringing sub-zero temperatures into the region in the first real taste of winter.

On Saturday, most of the UK will be covered in fog and temperatures will remain cold, the Met Office said.

As we head into the early hours of the morning, the minimum temperature is expected to be as low as -2C.

And it won't get much warmer next week, with much of the country seeing highs as low as 4C or 5C at the start of December.

Most places will be dry and settled this weekend, but there will be a lot of freezing fog around, according to forecasters.

Met Office Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "Two words essentially sum up this weekend - dry and gloomy."

Two weather fronts are bringing a large amount of clouds in the country, with mist and fog seen especially overnight, the forecaster added.

Despite most of the country staying dry, some regions are likely to experience downpours during the day.

Mr McGivern said: "We will see some showers for south-west England into Wales into the early hours of Saturday.

"There will also be some showers in northern Scotland, but they are moving away."

Northern Ireland and northern England will experience clear spells, with a few freezing fog patches and frost in southern Scotland, according to the meteorologist.

Mr McGivern said Scotland will see a "lovely day" on Saturday with "plenty of sunshine" despite the cold temperatures.

Northern Ireland is also set to have a bright start before clouds move in and remain for the remainder of Saturday.

The forecaster said England and Wales will stay grey and gloomy pretty much all day.

Sunday will see less fog around and temperatures will feel a bit milder.

Some parts of the UK could also experience snowfall next week (PA)

But it looks set to be a brief respite as snow could hit parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland next week.

Weather maps show snowfall could start around December 3 and last for a week.

MET OFFICE OUTLOOK

Today

Mostly cloudy across England and Wales, cloud thick enough for patchy rain over parts of Wales and northern and central England. Cloud spreads into Northern Ireland later whilst parts of southeast England brightens up later. Most of Scotland fine.

Tonight

Mostly cloudy for many and turning misty for much of England and Wales. Colder with clearer skies across much of Scotland where isolated freezing fog patches develop later.

Sunday

Most regions rather dull and cloudy. Brighter with sunny spells across northeastern Scotland and some sunny spells developing over parts of west Wales and southwest England too.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday

Rain affecting all parts of the UK for a time on Monday and Wednesday, with a mostly dry and sunny interlude on Tuesday. Turning colder from the north on Wednesday.
