Let’s face it: we’ve not had much of a summer.
Apart from a hot spell during the middle of July, helping to mark the month’s fifth warmest on record , we’ve not seen much in the way of sunshine and settled weather.
And unfortunately, the theme of showers and rain looks set to continue as we go through September.
It will start off dry and fine, but increasingly become wet as the days and weeks progress.
So, in a bit more detail, here’s what we can expect from the start of autumn as the days become shorter and the night draws in quicker.
Weather forecast for September 2021: What is the picture looking like?
According to the BBC, the dry weather we’ve seen at the end of August is set to give way as high pressure moves away from us.
That will allow low pressure systems to move in, bringing unsettled, showery weather to our shores.
So sun-worshippers should enjoy the sunny weather over the first few days of September, with one forecaster even telling people not to “put the garden furniture away just yet”.
Weather Trending and ex-Met Office and BBC weatherman, John Hammond, told Essex Live : “Many of us can look forward to some fine weather, so don't put away your garden furniture just yet.”
But it’s not expected to last, with rain and showers the main feature for the month of September.
According to the BBC website: “Things will stay dry for a while, but by the weekend there is a greater chance of low pressure arriving and bringing some wetter, more unsettled weather,” its weather outlook says.
And between the 6 and 12 September, the unsettled picture is set to continue.
“Generally, confidence is high that we will see a more unsettled pattern dominated by low pressure for this week,” its weather outlook reads.
“However, this comes with a rather large caveat: Atlantic tropical cyclones. The 2021 season is ramping up this week, and we expect continued high activity in the coming weeks.
“If a tropical cyclone can get close enough to Europe, it can disrupt the pattern and promote more high pressure or bring much wetter weather.”
What about the latter stages of the month then? Unfortunately, the forecast is for more wet weather with temperatures tumbling too.
The BBC’s weather outlook says: “Low pressure is expected to be the main driving force in the weather throughout the month of September, with only brief deviations at times.”
“With low pressure extending into the British Isles from Iceland, temperatures will likely tend to fall a little below average,” it adds.
