UK weather forecast: Flood warnings as heavy rain and 40mph winds to batter Britain

Britain is set to see an unsettled end to June despite the recent heatwave - with flooding likely and winds to reach 40mph on Monday.

Just days after seeing highs of 33C, temperatures are set to drop below average for the time of year as the UK returns to the persistent rain of earlier in the month.

The Met Office has put two yellow warnings in place for rain between 6am and 3pm in north west England and Scotland, and parts of Northern Ireland.

Flooding of a few homes and businesses is said to be likely, while bus and train services will probably be affected.

There could also be some interruption to power supplies and other services as well as spray on the roads.

BBC forecaster Chris Fawkes said for much of the UK it's "already been wetter than normal" for June.

And "that's before you factor in the heavy rain that's been around this weekend and also the rain that we've still got yet to come".

"All in all these next few days are looking pretty unsettled with spells of rain around at times - it will be windy at times this week and nowhere near as hot as it was last week," he continued.

Monday is likely to be the same as Sunday with the northern half of the country in particular seeing outbreaks of rain "perhaps turning showery at times" and blustery winds.

Further south will see drier weather, "but also a few passing showers" - with gusts continuing to run in around 30 or 40mph.

Mr Fawkes said: "A blowy kind of day and temperatures continue to be a little bit lower than normal for the time of year, highs of 16 and 19C."

A second band of rain is set to move in from the south as the week goes on meaning showers and wind into the weekend, though from Thursday temperatures will rise to highs of 22C.

UK 5 day weather forecast

Monday 29 Jun - Friday 3 Jul

Today:

Wet, windy weather for some northern and central areas, especially for western hills, will slowly ease, although it will stay windy and disappointingly cool. Elsewhere sunny intervals and scattered showers, these perhaps heavy and thundery in eastern Scotland.

Tonight:

Showery rain still affecting some northwestern areas but much less heavy. Many southern and eastern areas dry with a few clearer breaks but further rain into the far southwest later.

Tuesday:

Some rain running across southern England, though perhaps brightening up slowly later. Elsewhere a little sunshine but often rather cloudy, with scattered showers, heaviest in eastern Scotland. A little warmer.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Showers on Wednesday becoming confined to the south on Thursday, with more sunshine developing. Light winds. On Friday rain and strengthening winds moving east across many northern and western areas.
