UK weather forecast: Flood alerts in place as heavy rain threatens weekend wash out

Thick cloud coverage and heavy rain are on the cards today - a marked change from blue skies and highs of 22C on Thursday.

The Environment Agency has issued 15 flood alerts across England with heavy, thundery showers expected - particularly in the south.

Highs of around 14C mean a much milder day than Brits were treated to yesterday, but fears of weather warnings due to severe thunder this afternoon have not come to fruition.

However, Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said thunder is still certainly likely in the south as the day progresses.

"A very different day across the south on Friday, with more cloud and some heavy rain - something we haven't seen for quite some time," he said.

Overnight there were one or two scattered showers across England and Wales though for the most part it was dry with clear skies.

However, it was much milder across the south thanks to a breeze and for those in northeast Scotland "frost is possible" this morning, said Mr Deakin.

The meteorologist went on to say Friday will see a "fine start for many" but rain and cloud beginning in the south will quickly spread into the Midlands, East Anglia and parts of Wales.

Though for most that miserable band of weather will tend to "fizzle out as it does so", said Mr Deakin.

"It will be a cooler day, especially on the east coast, with a brisk and chilly wind but some pleasant, warm sunshine across western Scotland and Northern Ireland," he continued.

The forecaster said by the evening the rain will be quickly dying down for many but "some heavy, thundery showers" are likely in southern England.

"Still a continued risk of heavy showers across some parts this weekend, [but] many will stay dry but rather cloudy," he added.
