UK weather forecast: Exact date of 'snow bomb' as parts of UK set for 10inch flurries

Brits are set for another cold snap which will see heavy snow fall in mid-March and temperatures plunge with a sub-zero freeze for much of the country.

After a spell of wet weather, it is likely to be a frosty start to Tuesday and the temperatures could drop as low as -4C, according to the Met Office.

The weather does get warmer as the week continues but there is more cold weather ahead.

New maps from WXCharts show an aggressive weather front sweeping in from the south east next Thursday (March 10) when the snow bomb is due to hit.

Some of the heaviest snowfall will come in Scotland with 25 centimetres likely to land.

But there will also be flurries in the Welsh Valleys, with Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire and the north east of England also expected to experience up to three inches later in the day, reported the DailyStar.

In areas further south, this weather is expected to instead come in the form of heavy rain, with nine to 10mm anticipated to fall per hour in London, Bristol and the Home Counties.

Looking ahead to next week, the Met Office outlook for Saturday (March 5) to Monday (March 14) reads: "A largely settled start to this period with sunny spells across the north and west.

Much of the country is likely to see flurries of snow (PA)

"Cloudier conditions with light rain or drizzle are more likely further south and east, although brighter spells are also possible here.

"Light winds are expected through the weekend with daytime temperatures near average, although colder in the south. For the following week, there is likely to be a northwest-southeast split in weather conditions. The southeast is most likely to be dry and settled for the longest, with the northwest most likely to see the wind and rain."

Before that people in parts of the county will wake up to sub zero temperatures on Tuesday before the mercury rises during the day.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: "Temperatures dipping to if not below freezing in spots.

The snow will hold off this week but it will be a frosty start on Tuesday (PA)

"So a frosty start -2C to -4C for sheltered parts of northern England and Scotland but a fine day to come because high pressure is moving in following the passage of this low front but it does linger there close to the south east.

"Then this other warm front attached to it begins to move north again by the end of Tuesday to bring a return to cloudy and damp weather for many.

"So a dull and damp start to the South East and a lot of cloud cover I think for the southern counties of England, the south west on Tuesday morning. Meanwhile North Wales, north Midlands, northwards it’s blue skies for many. Still a few showers for the north and north west of Scotland these tending to fade as the days draws on."

UK forecast for the next 5 days

Today:

Cloudy with outbreaks of rain across south-eastern parts of England, and also returning north across other southern areas later. Early frost and patchy fog across central areas, with a few showers in the north, then dry with sunny periods.

Tonight:

Clear spells allowing a frost and possibly a few fog patches in the north. Cloud and outbreaks of rain over southern areas edging into central areas later.

Wednesday:

Dry and bright for Scotland and northern England at first, but cloud and occasional rain further south spreading to other western parts. Becoming breezy with strong winds in northwest.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Slow-moving band of cloud and rain on Thursday with the best of the brightness in the east and southeast. Becoming drier and brighter for many with overnight frost.
