UK weather forecast: Enjoy Easter Monday heat because thunderstorms are coming

Easter Monday temperatures could hit a sweltering 27C today - but enjoy it while you can because thunderstorms are on the way.

The Middle East hot air plume blown from the Middle East to Britain is expected to peak on Tuesday with forecast highs of 28C.

But thundery showers are expected from Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday in the South and Midlands, bringing the risk of flooding.

Temperatures will still remain pleasant for this time of year though, even as the heat cools off to 'just' 23C.

It comes after several day of sizzling and even record high temperatures.

Britain is set for the hottest day of the year six days in a row to tomorrow after increasing temperatures since last Thursday.

Saturday was named the warmest day of the year so far when the temperature hit 25.5C in Gosport, Hampshire.

And on Easter Sunday, the mercury reached 25C in Wisley, Sussex, on Sunday - falling just short of England’s 25.3C record set in 2011.

Britain was the hottest place in Europe yesterday, with the unusual situation of Brits on holiday in Spain facing rain.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: “Easter Monday could well break its temperature record, with beautiful sunny conditions for most.

“Twenty seven degrees centigrade is possible on Monday and there is potential for 28C on Tuesday.

“It's a nice change to be talking about good weather and not rain for a Bank Holiday.

“But thundery showers are expected from Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday in the South and Midlands, with the end of the warmest temperatures with 23C on Wednesday.”

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze added: “'Meltdown Monday' sees 27C possible.

“It's remarkable Britain is hotter than just about everywhere in Europe, while Brits on holiday in Spain have miserable weather.

“But thunderstorms risk localised flooding from Tuesday.”

The overall record temperature for the four-day Easter weekend is 29.4C, set on Easter Saturday, April 16, 1949, in Camden, London.
