UK weather forecast: Drivers warned over icy roads as temperatures drop to -4C

Drivers have been warned to be alert for icy roads throughout the UK with temperatures dropping to -4C.

The Met Office earlier issued an urgent weather warning amid fears six hours of snow could be coming as a blizzard battered parts of the UK.

The freezing conditions is causing hazardous conditions on the roads which have been "like an ice rink" in untreated parts.

Forecasters warned conditions could be tricky with a higher risk of accidents.

The Met Office said: "Icy surfaces are possible for a time on Friday evening and overnight, leading to potentially tricky conditions."

They said this could lead to an increased likelihood of accidents or injuries going into Saturday morning.

"Early wintry showers in the north, and rain, sleet and hill snow further south will leave surfaces cold and wet by early evening," the Met Office said.

"Clear spells for a time will allow ice to form in places, particularly for evening commuters, before temperatures trend up after midnight.

Meteorologist Richard Miles also said: "It’s going to be colder than we have been used to over the last couple of days and Christmas.

"We are going into a period when temperatures will be dropping quite a bit."

Dangerous weather conditions could see as much as 10cm of snow falling across higher ground - as well as a high risk of dangerous ice patches and lightning strikes in some areas.
