UK weather forecast: Cloudy and mild for New Year's Eve but temperatures will plunge in first week of 2019

Tens of thousands of people will descend on central London on New Year's Eve

New Year’s Eve revellers across most of the country will face a mild and cloudy night of celebrations before temperatures plummet during a cold spell in the first week of 2019.

Temperatures of 10C have been predicted in London throughout the day on Monday, before the mercury drops down to 8C at midnight for the New Year fireworks.

Forecaster Sophie Yeomans from Met Office said there was a “small chance of slight rain” during the day in some parts of the UK but overall “most places will be quite dry and mild”.

Partygoers have still been warned to “wrap up warm if you are heading out” however, as temperatures will continue to drop to around 5C in the early hours of the morning.

Meteorologist Simon Partridge said London and Edinburgh, where large crowds are expected to gather to celebrate the start of 2019, will remain chilly but dry for the most part.

He said: "London will be dry and cloudy, with temperatures expected to be as low as five or six degrees. Take a coat if you're going to be watching the fireworks on the Thames.”

After we’ve welcomed in the new year, forecasters have predicted a cold spell across the UK when overnight temperatures may get close to freezing in parts of the country.

Temperatures will be "mainly about where they should be" for the time of year, but cooler compared to recent weeks and the milder weather over the festive season.

Ms Yeomans said: “As we go through the rest of the week on Wednesday temperatures will drop to around 7C and it will stick around there for the rest of the week.

“It’ll be colder than we have had in recent days, but not extreme or unusual for this time of year, it’s coming back to the average temperatures we expect to see.

“There will be an increased chance of getting some frost overnight, into the middle of January we might see a small or milder spell before turning a bit colder before the end of January.”
