UK weather forecast: Brits set to wake up to sun after wet week brought icy temperatures

The UK will wake up to dry and sunny weather conditions today after a wet and chilly week saw temperatures plummet.

Most parts of the country will be dry with sunny spells on Saturday - but temperatures are set to remain cold.

Eastern parts of England will be cloudy, with some rain expected, according to the Met Office.

It will be windy in many areas of the country, particularly in the East, with coastal gales possible, forecasters say.

The Met Office has seven flood alerts in place after the country was drenched by heavy rain on Friday.

BBC Weather's Tomasz Schafernaker said a low pressure over the North Sea has sent gale-force winds along the coast, with gusts up to 67mph near Grimsby on Friday.

Winds will continue to batter parts of the UK this weekend, he added.

Across Scotland and Northern Ireland tomorrow there will be light winds and clearer skies, so temperatures will be “down to close to freezing, especially outside of town”, the forecaster said.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill told Mirror Online that Northern Ireland may experience its coldest night on record this weekend - with temperatures around -4C or -5C.

The previous lowest temperature registered in the region was -3.6C.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said: "The whole weekend will be on the chilly side, but for the vast majority it will be dry with sunny spells.

"We are looking at some showers, particularly across eastern England where Friday was especially soggy."

The forecaster said this is due to an area of low pressure, combined with another weather front trying to push in from the West.

Mr Deakin said the temperature on Saturday morning will be around 6C in southern England and could get as low as 3C in parts of Scotland.

Mr Burkill added: "It will turn a bit cloudier as we get into the afternoon for some places.

"It's not going to be as windy as yesterday, but there will still be wind in some eastern parts of the UK."

Some areas in the countryside could experience frost on Saturday and Sunday morning, with temperatures set to hit -5 in parts of Northern Ireland and northern England.

On Sunday, large areas of the UK will continue to experience sunshine, Mr Deakin said.

However, clouds across eastern parts of England will bring in winds and chilly temperatures.

Britain faced 65mph gusts on Friday after a chilly week - a change from last week when the weather was largely sunny and warm.

Parts of Yorkshire were hit by heavy showers, hail and thunder this week.

Hail was reportedly up to 2.5cm (1in) in diameter in places, making conditions difficult for drivers.
