UK weather forecast: Brits set to bake in 31C scorching heat as 'summer fights back'

The summer is ready to fight back with scorching 31C heat on Friday - but before that some of us have got to withstand winds in excess of 50mph.

It's been a miserable start to the week and that trend is set to continue on Tuesday with downpours and heavy wind gusts - 53mph in parts of Scotland - by the afternoon.

But incoming high pressure will allow temperatures to steadily climb with Friday soaring into the 30s for the first time this month, albeit on the final day of July.

BBC forecaster Nick Miller said: "After such a wet and windy start you'd be forgiven for thinking autumn had come early, so here's a sight for sore eyes: Friday, summer fighting back, temperatures widely in the mid to upper 20s, some the low 30s if you like that sort of thing.

"But one day doesn't make a heatwave and, well, it'll be out as soon as it arrives, that heat," he continued.

"But it will arrive with a pressure pattern at the end of the week allowing the wind to turn from a northwesterly now to a south-southeasterly.

"That's the direction that will draw up the heat and for a time it will come with plenty of sunshine."

BBC weather charts show 31C in London on Friday afternoon, in line with the hottest days of the year so far.

However, Mr Miller warned that's still a few days off with Tuesday looking like a particularly cool day for this time of year, with plenty of blustery wind and some showers.

Though there will be more sunshine than Monday.

Some overnight showers are continuing into this morning, with temperatures dipping to single figures in parts of the north of England.

But it's the far northeast of Scotland and the Northern Isles that will feel the brunt of the rain and where the wind will be strongest.

Showers will be felt across the west, including some in Northern Ireland as well as northwest England and north Wales.

However, elsewhere in England and Wales the weather will remain fairly dry, with any outbreaks moving quickly as the wind continues to pick up.

Temperatures could reach highs of 20C, but most of the country will be languishing in the teens, while Wednesday will be largely dry, before things start to really pick up on Thursday.

"Then on Friday the sunshine and the heat - but spoiler, it's cooler again for all at the weekend," added Mr Miller.

UK 5 day weather forecast

Today:

Far northeast Scotland and particularly Orkney seeing heavy rain and gales. Elsewhere a windy day with showers in the west and north. Further south mostly dry with some sunshine.

Tonight:

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
