UK weather forecast: Brits brace for blustery weekend of heavy rain causing flooding risk

Brits are set for a weekend of blustery winds and heavy downpours sweeping across the UK.

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning as torrents of rain could cause flooding in Wales and northwest England.

Gusts of up to 45mph hit the country on Friday while some sunny spells will break through the generally wet and windy weather.

It comes after parts of the UK were soaked by nearly a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours earlier this week.

Meteorologist Greg Dewhust told the Standard that the weekend will get off to a "blustery" start on Friday.

"Today is going to be a fairly blustery day across the UK with some sunny spells and heavy showers.

"Showers may last for longer periods of time throughout the day," he added.

"It will be a very windy day, especially in the south of England and Wales with gust up to 40-45mph."

Mr Dewhurst said temperatures are beginning to cool down with a high of 20C on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"Saturday will be a breezy day with sunny spells and showers, and Saturday night into Sunday morning will see very heavy rain and strong winds moving in from the Atlantic.

"This will continue through Sunday eventually clearing to brighter skies later on in the day."

Mr Dewhurst added that "heavy bursts of rain" mean a yellow warning has been issued for Saturday to Sunday evening.

Wales and western England could see between 20-40mm of rain, likely causing localised flooding, he added.

"Next week is looking rainy too," Mr Dewhurst said. "But it is set to get drier by the middle of the week. Temperatures will be cooler though with highs of around 17-18C."
