London weather forecast: More heavy downpours to hit UK after nearly a month's worth of rain falls in 12 hours

Britons are bracing for more wet weather after heavy downpours brought nearly a month’s worth of rain in 12 hours to some parts of the UK.

The Met Office said wet and changeable conditions will continue after some areas were soaked with more than 50mm of rain on Tuesday, about an inch off the September rainfall average.

Meteorologist Marco Petagna told the Standard that Wednesday would get off to a “cloudy and misty” start with some “sharp periods of rainfall” particularly across the north east of England.

“Things should ease up and brighten though the day,” he said, but added Brits should be prepared for more wet weather.

“There’s a fair bit of rain coming in as we go through tonight and into Thursday morning from west,” he said.

Temperatures are set to be mild hovering around 18C to 21C.

On Tuesday, the maximum rainfall of 55.8mm was recorded in Wiltshire after wind, rain and thunder battered parts of the country.

London commuters faced travel chaos during the evening rush hour as the rain caused flooding and delays.

Footage recorded at Liverpool Street station shows water pouring through the ceiling at the city centre station, as trains set off on their journeys into Essex and East Anglia.

Heavy rain in Harrogate, Yorkshire, caused problems on the third morning of the cycling Road World Championships, as torrents of water running down the roads caused riders to slip and get a drenching.

In Birmingham, a car was pictured stranded surrounded by overflowing rain water.
