UK weather forecast: Britain set to sizzle in 24C heat before temperatures drop this weekend

Britons are set to enjoy another day of sunshine and soaring temperatures before the mercury begins to drop at the weekend, with cloudy skies bringing a chance of rain for some.

Temperatures will peak at 24C on Friday, with people expected to make the most of the warm weather during their daily exercise amid the coronavirus lockdown.

April has so far been "remarkably" hot with temperatures averaging 2.5C above normal for the month, forecasters said.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Met Office meteorologist Emma Salter said: “On Friday there will be good spells of sunshine everywhere, with temperatures reaching about 23 or 24C in London.”

“Saturday will be largely dry but there will be some cloud on the eastern coast and in the south-west of England, which could bring the odd light shower.”

“But it’s not until Sunday until we see more a appreciable chance rain. There is a risk of showers anywhere in the UK, with a focus on central and northern England.”

Mrs Salter said temperatures will not reach the highs seen throughout this week, with highs on Saturday of about 22C.

On Sunday the mercury could plunge to about 14C in some northern regions and in Scotland, she added.
