UK weather forecast: Britain set for weekend washout before sunshine returns next week

Britons are set for a weekend of wet weather before sunshine returns next week.

Forecasters say a low pressure system will bring scattered and heavy showers across the country for the next few days.

The worst of the wet weather is due to hit on Friday, bringing rain and wind to most of the UK.

Temperatures will also stay cool in the high teens - low for this time of year - even as a high pressure system moves in after the weekend.

Greg Dewhurst, a Met Office spokesman said: “Throughout Thursday, we are looking at a brighter day compared to today’s weather, but we will still see scattered showers and it will perhaps be on the breezier side.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the Welsh coast on Friday (PA)

Temperatures will reach highs of 20C in Scotland and the north of England, and 24C in the south, he added.

"But for Friday, unsettled weather is moving in from the Atlantic across the whole of the UK," he said.

“So everywhere will see a wet and windy day as the weather moves eastwards. Maximum temperatures will be around 20C in the north and 21C in the south."

He said the weekend would see a mix of sunny spells, scattered heavy showers and long periods of rainfall.

“Maximum temperatures for Saturday will be around 19C in the north and about 22C in the south while Sunday will see 18C in the north and 21C in the south," he added.

Monday is set to see relatively unsettled conditions with a mixed bag of sun and rain, Mr Dewhurst said.

“However, there are signs that as the week goes on, high press is likely to bring drier and brighter weather particularly in the south,” he said. “But temperatures look to remain around the low 20s.

“The high pressure will be gradually building so will take a few days, coming in from the west.”
