London weather forecast: UK braced for hottest day of year before colder temperatures and rain

Britain could see its hottest day of the year this weekend, before colder temperatures and rain hit the country.

Forecasters predict the mercury is expected to reach highs of 30C in eastern England - hotter than in Ibiza and St Tropez - while temperatures hitting up to 27C elsewhere in the country.

The highest temperature of the year so far is 25.8C in Cornwall in April.

But a cold front will leave the country feeling cooler on Monday, bringing showers and a chance of thunder.

Met Office spokesperson Bonnie Diamond told the Standard: “Saturday will see the best of the weather across the UK, with temperatures hitting between 25C and 27C in central, eastern and southern parts, and highs of 28C expected in East Anglia.

“It won’t be quite as balmy in Scotland and Northern Ireland, which can expect rain throughout the day on Friday.

“In Norfolk and other parts of eastern England, we could see highs of 30C on Sunday.

"But by this point things will have started to cool down in other areas, as polar air moves across from the west.”

The top temperature of the year so far is 25.8C, which was seen in Cornwall in April. So we’ll overtake that this weekend, particularly in sunny areas.”

London is expected to see highs of 26C on Saturday, dipping to 24C on Sunday.

But the scorching temperatures will swiftly make way for “fresher” conditions, as the tropical air hitting the country on Friday is replaced by Monday’s chilly maritime front, the forecaster said.

“We are expecting things to feel quite cool and fresh on Monday, with showery rain moving across from west to east and with possible thundery bursts in the afternoon,” said Ms Diamond.

“Still, the start of June will still see above average temperatures for everyone. Even in Glasgow and Belfast, which will see the worst of the weather, we could see highs of 17C, which will still feel mild.”

Bookmaker Coral makes this June 2-1 to be the hottest since records began.
