Britain’s cold snap is set to come to an end and will be replaced by wind and rain, according to the Met Office.

Snow, ice and plunging temperatures caused treacherous conditions from Thursday into the weekend across vast swathes of the UK.

In Scotland, a yellow warning is in place for snow and ice from 9pm on Sunday until midday on Monday, with up to 6cm expected on higher ground.

However weather is expected to improve throughout the week.

Ellie Creed, forecaster at the Met Office told the Standard: “Monday will have a foggy start with rain gradually easing. It will feel damp. Winds will ease as well with temperatures reaching a high of 9C.”

Tuesday in the capital will also be cloudy, “with rain overnight.”

“Wednesday may have rain later on while Thursday will have blustery showers with some bright spells. “

Temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to reach 11C and 10C respectively.

However Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said that “things are gradually getting back to normal.”

The warmer temperatures come after a low of -11.7C was recorded at Chillingham Barns in Northumberland in the early hours of Sunday morning.
